The evening of February 25th 2019, the United States Senate voted in majority favor (53-44) of legislation that would protect the lives of babies born-alive during a failed abortion procedure. Shockingly, the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act didn’t gain the 60 votes necessary to overcome the filibuster initiated by Democrat senators.
This proposed legislation came on the heels of the firestorm surrounding Virginia Governor Ralph Northam who publicly defended Virginia Delegate Kathy Tran’s bill that would legalize abortion to point of birth. Northam went a step further though, saying that mothers and physicians should be able to have conversations about whether babies born-alive during botched abortions should be left to die or not. This is infanticide. The silence from the Democratic party following Kathy Tran’s proposed legislation and Northam’s public comments on infanticide has been deafening.
While the 2002 Born-Alive Infants Protection Act (which gained unanimous consent from Republican and Democrat senators) specifies that babies who survive abortions and are born are to be recognized as human beings with human rights, the bill did not define what types of care, if any, are to be rendered. Additionally, New York’s new Reproductive Health Act, which passed on January 22, 2019 removed protections previously in place for babies born-alive during botched abortions.
This is why Senator Ben Sasse (R., Neb.) proposed this legislation. Wile the bigger battle is clearly over protecting the lives of 1 million unborn babies who are killed every year in our country on the mantle of “women’s health,” we can and should work to pass bi-partisan legislation that protects the lives of infants. The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protections Act would have done 3 simple and important things:
Yet, Democratic Senators defended their pro-infanticide vote by saying things like “this never happens,” and “there are already laws in place to protect these infants.” Strangely enough, the same Democratic senators who opposed protecting infants born-alive during failed abortions lended their full-support (along with every Republican) to pass the Justice for Victims of Lynching Act, which makes it illegal to lynch someone and adds lynching to the federal list of hate crimes, despite the fact that “there are already laws in place” that make it illegal to murder regardless of how it’s done.
However, the reality is that more babies are killed after surviving an abortion than our current system can track. According to “statistics recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 362 babies born alive following a botched abortion have died in the last decade.” But we’re fools if we think that every baby killed after surviving an abortion is reported. These 362 reported deaths pale in comparison to the population of born-alive babies who die at the hands of “physicians” and are quickly disposed of behind “sterile” clinic doors. Additionally, there are an estimated 44,000 abortion survivors living in our country today.
So what do we do with this? Here’s a simple idea: Supporting infanticide ought to disqualify you from public office. Many of the same Democrat senators who called for Governor Ralph Northam’s resignation over a 30 year old photo of him dressed in a racist costume refuse to tender their own resignations over unashamed support of killing infants. So let’s talk names. Here is a list of all 44 Senators who said we should NOT legally protect the lives of little born babies who survive failed attempts to kill them through abortion.
These 44 senators are out of touch with the American people. A 2018 Gallup poll found that only 13% of Americans support abortion in the third trimester. What do you think the percentage would be in support of fourth trimester abortion (i.e. infanticide)? I’d bet less than 1%. Unsurprisingly, the 6 leading Democratic candidates running for President in 2020 voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. The Democratic party has been the party of abortion since 1973. But when only 3 Democrat Senators cross the aisle to vote for protecting newborns from vicious abortionists, it’s safe to say they have now also become the party of infanticide.
It’s time for the Democratic party to be thrown into the limelight and forced to explain to the American people why dressing in a racist costume 30 years ago disqualifies you from public office, but supporting and voting for infanticide does not. It’s time for America to reject these infanticidal apologists and demand that they step down from public office. It’s time that we all see abortion and infanticide for what it really is: The murder of children at a very early stage of their physical development.
It’s time that we as a country refuse to allow anyone to serve in public office who is dedicated to the proposition that an entire class of human beings can be set aside to be killed.
