Hume Lake
Summer 2002 High School Camps
Response to Scott Klusendorf Presentations
"My students returned from HUME and all they could talk about was your two presentations. I think you struck a real cord with them." - Katie, youth direction, Stockton, CA
"I've been coming to Christian camps for five years. Although the talks are always interesting, not once has anyone ever told me how to defend my Christian beliefs until today. I'm not kidding: Your talk totally changed my life." - Crystal, age 17
"In just one hour, you managed to do what no one else has ever done: completely change my mind on abortion." - Steve, age 18
"Just a note of encouragement to say that we've heard from a number of people regarding your ministry this summer at Hume Lake and the feedback has been wonderful. The talks that you have given and challenges that you issued are really causing the youth both to think about their faith more seriously and to realize that they are standing on solid ground. Your faithfulness in driving up there every week is certainly bearing fruit! One young lady who spent the week counseling up there shared with us how surprised she was that so many of her counselees were sexually active and how the time up there caused them to think about their lifestyle and to open up, discuss, and rethink their actions." - Del
"Five young women stood up and confessed to the entire group (750 students) that they had procured abortions in the last three months. The two young women (age 14) you spoke with were among them. Not only did they say that you touched them at very deep level, they surrendered their lives to Christ and asked the rest of the camp to pray for them. They expressed gratitude for all that transpired that week, especially the abortion talk." - camp counselor reporting on what happened at "Victory Circle."
Scott's Comments
I'm not surprised about young people accepting Christ. That's what happens when we, as youth leaders, lovingly confront sin rather than ignore it. HUME leaders assure me that lots of kids are making decisions for Christ based on my talks. At Victory Circle, the apologetic presentations are mostly what the kids talk about as having the most impact.
I've had dozens of youth leaders thank me for the talks and ask how they can approach the abortion issue with other students.
One camp executive told me that my talks totally revolutionized and revitalized their "Wildwood" wilderness camp (where I speak to roughly 60-100 kids weekly after my main sessions at HUME) and that the main sessions at Ponderosa (the main HS camp) have "totally rocked." He said many staff members keep coming back to sit in on the sessions because there is so much 'valuable' information we just aren't getting anywhere else. He said the response from students and youth pastors was overwhelmingly positive, an avalanche of thrilled campers and staff.
One 17 year old girl told me the following after my main talk:
Girl: "I think you've convinced me."
Scott: "Of what? The pro-life position?"
Girl: "Yes, but more than that - to become a Christian. My friends have pressured me for two years to do it, but they've never answered my questions about how we can trust the Bible. Did the disciples make it all up, and what about those that never hear about God? You're the first person that's addressed those points directly. I don't think I have any more excuses. I'm not completely sure, but you make a very impressive case...my friends never gave me that stuff. You did. I can't deny the evidence and remain credible. I owe you for telling me what no one else ever has. And I've gone to youth group for three years now."
